St. Michael's Church, known locally as 'Michel', is Hamburg's most iconic church and a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Its 132-meter copper-covered spire is a landmark visible from afar. The church interior is bright and spacious, with white columns, a grand organ, and an impressive pulpit. The crypt contains tombs of notable Hamburg citizens. The main draw is the observation deck at 82 meters, accessible by elevator, providing sweeping views of the Elbe River, the port, and the city. The church also hosts concerts and services. Its location in the Neustadt district makes it a convenient stop on a walking tour.
