The Alter Elbtunnel, opened in 1911, is a remarkable engineering feat that connects the St. Pauli docks to the southern banks of the Elbe River. Visitors descend via large, wood-paneled elevators or a long staircase into a tiled tunnel that stretches 426 meters beneath the river. The tunnel’s interior is adorned with Art Nouveau tiles and features separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. At the other end, you emerge onto the Steinwerder peninsula, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hamburg skyline and the bustling harbor. The tunnel is not only a functional crossing but also a nostalgic journey back in time, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century urban infrastructure.
