Schalke is a prominent mountain in the Harz range, located just south of Goslar. It rises to about 762 meters and is crowned by a wooden observation tower, the Schalke-Turm, which provides panoramic views over the Harz forests and the town of Goslar. The area is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, with well-marked trails leading through spruce forests and across open ridges. In winter, the slopes are used for sledding and cross-country skiing. The summit is accessible via a forest road, making it a manageable hike for most fitness levels. The tower itself is a simple but rewarding structure; climbing its steps reveals a 360-degree vista that stretches to the Brocken on clear days. Visitors often combine a trip to Schalke with a visit to the nearby Grube Samson silver mine or the historic old town of Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Don't miss

  • Climb the Schalke-Turm for panoramic Harz views
  • Hike the circular trail around the summit
  • Enjoy winter sledding on designated slopes
  • Spot wildlife like deer and birds of prey
  • Photograph the Brocken from the tower on clear days
