Perched on a steep hill above the town of Eisenach, Wartburg Castle is a remarkably preserved medieval fortress that holds immense historical and cultural significance. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it attracts visitors from around the globe. The castle's most famous chapter unfolded between 1521 and 1522, when Martin Luther, under the protection of Frederick the Wise, lived here in disguise as 'Junker Jörg' and translated the New Testament from Greek into German in just ten weeks. Today, visitors can tour the Luther Room, where the translation took place, complete with period furnishings and a Bible chained to the wall. The castle also features the Romanesque palace, the Knights' Hall, and a museum displaying art, armor, and artifacts spanning centuries. The panoramic views of the Thuringian Forest from the castle walls are breathtaking. The experience of walking through the gatehouse, crossing the drawbridge, and exploring the courtyards feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages.
