The Saxon Railway Museum (Sächsisches Eisenbahnmuseum) is an open-air museum located in a historic locomotive depot in the Hilbersdorf district of Chemnitz. The museum showcases the history of rail transport in Saxony, with a collection of over 100 locomotives, railcars, and carriages, including steam, diesel, and electric engines. Visitors can explore the roundhouse, turntable, and workshop buildings, many of which date back to the early 20th century. The museum offers a hands-on experience: you can climb into the cabs of some locomotives, walk through vintage passenger cars, and even ride a narrow-gauge railway on special event days. The site's industrial atmosphere, with the smell of oil and coal, transports visitors back to the golden age of steam.

Don't miss

  • The working turntable and roundhouse, still used to move locomotives
  • The collection of Saxon steam locomotives, including the famous 'Saxon XII' class
  • The historic workshop where you can see restoration work in progress
  • The narrow-gauge railway offering short rides on select days
  • The signal box with original mechanical levers
