The German submarine Wilhelm Bauer, originally U-2540, is a Type XXI U-boat that now serves as a museum ship at the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum in Bremerhaven. Launched in 1945, it was scuttled at the end of World War II, later raised and used by the West German navy for testing, and finally restored as a museum in 1984. Visitors can enter the submarine through a hatch and navigate its narrow corridors, seeing the cramped living quarters, control room, engine room, and torpedo tubes. The experience is immersive, with original equipment and signage explaining how the crew of 57 lived and worked underwater. Distinctive for its advanced design, faster and more streamlined than earlier U-boats, the Wilhelm Bauer is a testament to naval engineering. The museum also features exhibits on submarine history, making it a must-see for military history enthusiasts.
