Alte Hofhaltung, or the Old Court, is a picturesque ensemble of half-timbered buildings and Renaissance arcades on Domplatz. Originally the residence of the prince-bishops, it was later replaced by the New Residence. Today, the complex houses the Historical Museum of Bamberg, which chronicles the city's history from its founding to the 19th century. The courtyard itself is a popular venue for concerts, markets, and the annual Sandkerwa festival. Visitors can wander through the arcaded walkways, admire the ornate façade, and step into the museum to see artifacts like medieval sculptures, guild treasures, and a model of the city in 1600. The atmosphere is lively yet steeped in history, with the sound of footsteps echoing off the cobblestones.
