The Palace of Aachen, also known as the Aachen Imperial Palace, was Charlemagne's primary residence and the heart of his empire. Built in the late 8th century, it included the royal hall (Aula Regia), the Palatine Chapel (now part of the cathedral), and other administrative buildings. Though much of the palace was destroyed over time, its legacy lives on in the cathedral and the surrounding Katschhof square. Visitors can explore the remnants and imagine the grandeur of Charlemagne's court. The site offers a glimpse into Carolingian architecture and the political ambitions of the first Holy Roman Emperor.

Don't miss

  • The Katschhof square, the former palace courtyard
  • The Granus Tower, a surviving part of the palace
  • The Palatine Chapel, now the cathedral core
  • The archaeological remains visible in the city museum
