Motsameta Monastery is a serene religious site located about 6 kilometers from Kutaisi, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Tskaltsitela River. The name 'Motsameta' means 'martyrs' in Georgian, referring to the brothers David and Constantine Mkheidze, who were executed here in the 8th century for refusing to convert to Islam. The current monastery complex dates from the 11th century, with later reconstructions. The main church, dedicated to the Mother of God, features a cross-in-square plan and frescoes from the 16th-17th centuries. The setting is breathtaking: the stone buildings blend with the rocky outcrop, and the river winds below through a gorge. Visitors can walk around the grounds, enjoy panoramic views from the cliff edge, and visit the small bell tower. The monastery is still active, so respectful attire is required. It's a peaceful retreat, often less crowded than nearby Gelati Monastery, and offers a glimpse into Georgia's religious history and architecture.
