The Kutaisi State Historical Museum, officially named after Niko Berdzenishvili, is a major cultural institution located at 18 Alexander Pushkin Street in the heart of Kutaisi. Its vast collection of over 200,000 artifacts spans from the Paleolithic era to the late Middle Ages, with a focus on the history of western Georgia (Colchis and Imereti). Exhibits include archaeological finds such as Bronze Age tools, Colchian jewelry, Greek and Roman coins, medieval manuscripts, and religious icons. The museum building itself is a historic structure from the 19th century, originally a bank. Visitors can explore multiple halls organized chronologically and thematically, with labels in Georgian and some English. Highlights include a collection of goldwork from the ancient kingdom of Colchis, including the famous 'Colchian belt' and intricate jewelry. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and has a small gift shop. It's an essential stop for understanding the region's rich history, from the myth of the Golden Fleece to the medieval kingdom of Georgia.
