Porte de Mars

The Porte de Mars is a massive Roman triumphal arch dating from the early 3rd century AD, standing as the widest arch of the Roman world at over 32 meters. Originally part of the city walls, it was named after a nearby temple to Mars. The arch is adorned with intricate reliefs depicting mythological scenes, including Romulus and Remus, the Labours of Hercules, and agricultural motifs. Unlike many Roman arches, it has four passageways, three for traffic and one pedestrian, and its scale is awe-inspiring. Today, it sits in a pedestrian square, allowing visitors to walk through and around it freely. It is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments north of the Alps and a testament to Reims' importance as a Gallo-Roman capital.
