Pfister House (Maison Pfister)

Maison Pfister is one of Colmar's most photographed landmarks, a jewel of German Renaissance architecture built in 1537 for a wealthy hatter. Its most striking feature is the two-story corner oriel window, richly carved and topped with a wooden gallery that wraps around the facade. The exterior is covered in painted frescoes depicting biblical and allegorical scenes, restored to their original vibrant colors. The steep tiled roof and ornate dormers complete the fairy-tale appearance. Inside, a small courtyard and period rooms offer a glimpse into 16th-century domestic life. The building stands on Rue des Marchands, the main artery of the old town, surrounded by half-timbered houses and shops. Visitors often pause to admire the intricate woodwork and imagine the bustling market square of centuries past.
