The House of Heads, or Maison des Têtes, is one of Colmar's most photogenic landmarks. Built in 1609 for a wealthy merchant, this Renaissance building gets its name from the 106 whimsical and grotesque faces carved into its sandstone facade. Each head is unique, depicting characters from mythology, folklore, and daily life, with expressions ranging from comical to sinister. The building's crowning glory is a stunning oriel window and a rooftop terrace adorned with a statue of a cooper (barrel maker) by the famed sculptor Bartholdi. Today, the House of Heads houses a luxury hotel and a restaurant, but visitors can still admire the exterior for free. The intricate stonework and playful details make it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates artistic whimsy.
