The Basilica of Saint-Sernin is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a major pilgrimage church on the Way of Saint James. Its massive brick and stone structure, with a soaring octagonal bell tower, dominates the skyline of Toulouse. Inside, the vast nave and ambulatory with radiating chapels create a sense of awe. The church houses the relics of many saints, including Saint Saturnin (Sernin), the first bishop of Toulouse. Visitors are struck by the simplicity and grandeur of the design, with beautiful capitals and a crypt that holds the reliquaries.
