La Petite France is the most picturesque district in Strasbourg, located on the Grande Île (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with medieval half-timbered houses, many dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The area is crisscrossed by canals and locks, originally used by tanners to wash hides. Today, the quarter is filled with charming restaurants, boutiques, and patisseries. Visitors can take a boat tour on the Ill River to see the quarter from the water, or simply wander the streets and cross the covered bridges (Ponts Couverts). The Maison des Tanneurs (Tanners' House) is a notable building. The atmosphere is especially romantic at dusk when the lights reflect on the water.
Don't miss
- The half-timbered houses along the canals, especially Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes
- The Ponts Couverts (covered bridges) and the Vauban Dam nearby
- Boat tours on the Ill River for a unique perspective
- Maison des Tanneurs, a historic tanners' house now a restaurant
- The locks and water channels that show the area's industrial past
