Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie du Périgord (MAAP) is a treasure trove of art and history, housed in a 19th-century building near the cathedral. Founded in 1835, it is the oldest museum in the Dordogne. The archaeology section spans prehistory to the Middle Ages, with notable artifacts from the region's famous prehistoric sites, including flint tools and cave art replicas. The fine arts collection includes paintings from the 16th to 20th centuries, with works by local artists and European masters. The ethnography gallery displays objects from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, reflecting the museum's eclectic collecting history. A highlight is the collection of Périgordian furniture and traditional costumes. The museum's courtyard café is a pleasant spot to relax. It's an excellent introduction to the cultural heritage of the Périgord region.
