Place Masséna

Place Masséna is the vibrant heart of Nice, a sprawling pedestrian square that seamlessly connects the old town with the modern city. Its most distinctive feature is the black-and-white checkered pavement that creates a dramatic, chessboard-like effect underfoot. Surrounding the square are elegant, ochre-red buildings with green shutters, reflecting the Italianate architecture that defines the city. At the center stands the Fountain of the Sun, a monumental bronze sculpture by Alfred Janniot depicting Apollo surrounded by classical figures representing the seasons and celestial bodies. By night, the square comes alive with illuminated fountains and the glow of the nearby Promenade du Paillon gardens. Seven statues on tall columns, representing the seven continents, add a contemporary touch. Locals and visitors alike gather here to stroll, skate, or simply sit on the steps and soak in the lively atmosphere. The square also hosts seasonal events, including a Christmas market and open-air concerts.
