The Grand Place, officially named Place du Général de Gaulle, is the vibrant heart of Lille. This large cobblestone square is surrounded by beautiful 17th-century buildings with ornate facades, including the Vieille Bourse (Old Stock Exchange) and the Opera House. The square is a bustling hub where locals and tourists gather to relax at outdoor cafés, shop at the flower market, or simply people-watch. In the center stands the Column of the Goddess, a monument commemorating the city's resistance during the 1792 siege. The square comes alive during events like the Christmas market and the Braderie de Lille, one of Europe's largest flea markets. Its proximity to the Palais des Beaux-Arts and Old Lille makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the city.
