The Gallo-Roman Walls of Le Mans are a remarkable remnant of Roman engineering, stretching 1,300 meters around the old city. Built in the 3rd century AD, these walls are among the best-preserved in Europe, featuring 26 semi-circular towers that once defended the Roman city of Vindinum. Today, a walk along the wall offers stunning views of the medieval quarter and the Sarthe River. The walls are integrated into the city's fabric, with parts accessible via pedestrian paths that allow you to see the original stonework and brick patterns. Illuminated at night, they create a dramatic backdrop for the old town. The walls are free to view and provide a tangible connection to Le Mans' ancient past, making them a highlight for history buffs and casual strollers alike.

Don't miss

  • Walk the full circuit of the walls to see all 26 towers
  • View the walls from the riverbank for a panoramic perspective
  • Notice the reused Roman stones and inscriptions embedded in the masonry
  • Visit at night when the walls are beautifully lit
