Tour de la Chaîne is a formidable medieval tower that, together with Tour Saint-Nicolas, controlled access to La Rochelle's harbor via a heavy chain. Its name derives from this chain, which was raised to block enemy ships. Today, visitors can explore its thick-walled rooms, climb to the top for harbor views, and learn about its dual role as a defensive bastion and later a prison. The tower's interior features exhibits on its construction and the history of the port. The climb is less steep than Tour Saint-Nicolas but still offers rewarding vistas. The tower is part of a trio of historic landmarks that define La Rochelle's skyline, and visiting it provides insight into the city's maritime defenses. It's a quieter alternative to its neighbor, with a more intimate feel.
