The Vieux Bassin, or Old Harbor, is the historic centerpiece of Honfleur. Built in the 17th century, this rectangular tidal harbor is surrounded by a picturesque ring of slate-roofed, narrow townhouses that rise directly from the quayside. The basin is always active, with fishing boats, pleasure craft, and traditional sailing vessels bobbing at their moorings. Visitors can stroll along the quays, enjoy a coffee or meal at one of the many outdoor cafés and restaurants, and watch the comings and goings of the harbor. The reflections of the tall buildings in the calm water make this one of the most photographed spots in Normandy. The harbor is especially charming at sunset when the façades glow golden, and in the evening when the lights twinkle on the water.
