The Roman Theatre of Fréjus is the oldest known performance venue in the ancient city of Forum Julii, built in the 1st century AD. With a capacity of 7,500, it was used for plays, musical performances, and public gatherings. Today, the theatre is partially restored and used for summer festivals and cultural events. Visitors can sit on the stone steps, take in the excellent acoustics, and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape. The site offers a glimpse into Roman entertainment and urban life, with interpretive panels explaining its history. Its intimate scale compared to the amphitheater makes it a charming spot for a quiet visit.

Don't miss

  • Test the acoustics by speaking from the stage
  • Sit in the cavea (seating area) and imagine a Roman play
  • View the remains of the scaenae frons (stage building)
  • Attend a summer performance for a living history experience
