Porte Narbonnaise is the principal gateway into the fortified Cité de Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Flanked by two imposing towers, this 13th-century gate once served as the primary defensive entry point. As you approach, you'll cross a stone bridge that spans the dry moat, passing through a heavy wooden door beneath a portcullis. Inside, the gate opens onto the main street of the Cité, lined with shops and restaurants. The towers themselves are accessible and offer exhibits on medieval fortifications. The sheer scale of the gate, with its crenellations, arrow slits, and machicolations, gives a vivid sense of the city's military past. It's the most photographed spot in Carcassonne and the logical starting point for any visit.
Don't miss
- Walk across the drawbridge and imagine medieval defenders above
- Climb the towers for views over the Cité and surrounding countryside
- Examine the portcullis and defensive features like arrow slits
