Porte de l'Aude is a lesser-known gate on the western side of the Cité de Carcassonne, providing a quiet escape from the crowds. This simple arched passageway through the ramparts leads to a path that descends toward the Aude River. The real draw is the view: from the gate and the adjacent walkway, you can see the river valley, the vineyards, and the distant Pyrenees on clear days. It's a favorite spot for photographers, especially at sunset. Unlike the grand Porte Narbonnaise, this gate is modest and unassuming, but it offers a more intimate experience of the medieval fortifications. The area around the gate is less developed, with wild grass and old stone walls.
