Place Carnot is the vibrant heart of the Bastide Saint-Louis, Carcassonne's lower town. This rectangular square, lined with plane trees, is surrounded by 18th- and 19th-century buildings housing cafés, brasseries, and shops. The square is dominated by the Fontaine de Neptune, a 18th-century fountain. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, the square transforms into a bustling market where locals buy fresh produce, cheeses, olives, and flowers. The atmosphere is convivial, with the scent of roasting chickens and the chatter of vendors. In the evenings, the terraces fill with people enjoying apéritifs. Place Carnot is a perfect spot to experience everyday life in Carcassonne, away from the tourist crowds of the Cité. It also hosts occasional events like concerts and Christmas markets.
