The Château Comtal is the inner stronghold of the Cité de Carcassonne, a formidable castle built by the Trencavel dynasty in the 12th century. It features a rectangular layout with five towers, a deep dry moat, and a drawbridge. Inside, the museum displays artifacts from the site's history, including sculptures, ceramics, and architectural fragments. A highlight is the walk along the castle's ramparts, which connect to the outer walls and offer stunning views. The château also houses a permanent exhibition on the restoration work of Viollet-le-Duc. It's a must for understanding the military and political importance of the citadel.
