Pont Valentré is an iconic medieval bridge that has stood as the emblem of Cahors since its completion in the 14th century. Spanning the Lot River with six graceful arches, it is one of the finest surviving examples of a fortified bridge in France. Visitors approach along the riverbank, taking in the three original defensive towers that rise from the bridge's structure, complete with battlements and arrow slits. Walking across the bridge, you can admire the stonework and imagine the traffic of merchants and pilgrims that once crossed here. The bridge is especially photogenic at sunset when the warm light illuminates the golden limestone. From the bridge, you get a panoramic view of the city's rooftops and the cathedral spires. It is a must-see for history buffs and anyone who appreciates medieval engineering.
