The Grosse Cloche is a striking medieval belfry that once formed part of Bordeaux's city walls. Its name, meaning 'Great Bell,' refers to the massive 18th-century bell that still hangs in the tower. The structure consists of two round towers flanking a central passage, topped with a spire and a weather vane in the shape of a lion. Visitors can climb the tower to see the bell and enjoy views of the old town. The gate's facade is decorated with the city's coat of arms and a clock dating from the 18th century. The surrounding area, Rue Saint-James, is a pedestrian street lined with shops and cafes, making it a pleasant stop. The Grosse Cloche is a symbol of Bordeaux's municipal independence and a must-see for history enthusiasts.
