The Porte Noire is a remarkable Roman triumphal arch dating from the 2nd century AD, located in the historic center of Besançon. Despite its name ('Black Gate'), which likely comes from the dark patina of the stone, the arch is a stunning example of Roman imperial architecture. It was originally part of the city's Roman walls and served as a monumental gateway. The arch is richly decorated with sculptural reliefs depicting scenes from mythology and Roman military victories, including figures of gods, warriors, and captives. Today, it stands in a small square, surrounded by modern life, offering a tangible link to the city's ancient past. Visitors can walk right up to it, examining the detailed carvings up close. The Porte Noire is particularly striking when illuminated at night, highlighting its intricate details.
