The Fortifications of Vauban in Besançon are a masterpiece of 17th-century military engineering, designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban under Louis XIV. This UNESCO World Heritage site surrounds the city with an impressive system of stone ramparts, bastions, and moats that snake along the Doubs River and climb the hillsides. Visitors can walk the grassy ramparts for panoramic views over the old town and the river valley, explore the Citadelle (a separate but integral part of the fortifications), and see original cannons and guardhouses. The scale and strategic genius are awe-inspiring, Vauban’s design turned Besançon into a near-impregnable fortress. The site is especially dramatic at sunset when the golden light illuminates the stonework.
