The Abbaye de Marmoutier is a tranquil historical site located just east of Tours, not far from Amboise. Once a major Benedictine monastery, it was founded by Saint Martin of Tours in 372 AD as a hermitage. The abbey grew into a powerful religious center, but much of it was destroyed during the French Revolution. Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins, including the remains of the church, cloister, and chapter house, as well as the monks' cells carved into the limestone cliffs. The site is surrounded by a peaceful garden and offers stunning views of the Loire River. It's a place of quiet reflection, away from the crowds, where you can imagine the daily life of medieval monks. The site also hosts occasional exhibitions and cultural events.
