Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi dominates the skyline of Albi with its massive brick structure, a hallmark of Southern French Gothic architecture. Unlike the stone cathedrals of northern France, this one is built almost entirely of brick, giving it a warm, reddish hue that glows in the sunlight. The exterior is fortress-like, with thick walls and few windows, but inside, visitors are greeted by a riot of color and detail. The vaulted ceiling is covered in vibrant frescoes, including one of the largest and most complete cycles of the Last Judgment in the world, painted in the 15th century. The ornate rood screen, carved from stone, separates the choir from the nave and is intricately decorated with biblical scenes. The cathedral also houses a magnificent organ and a treasury with relics and vestments. As you walk through, the sheer scale and artistry of the decoration, from the painted panels to the sculpted details, create an overwhelming sense of grandeur. The cathedral is a testament to the power and wealth of the bishops of Albi, who built it as a symbol of their authority after the Albigensian Crusade.

Don't miss

  • The 16th-century organ case, one of the oldest in France still in use
  • The treasury, displaying gold and silver reliquaries and vestments
  • The view from the bell tower (if open), offering panoramic views of Albi and the Tarn River
