Church of Saint George (Biete Giyorgis) is the crowning jewel of Lalibela, a perfectly symmetrical cross-shaped church hewn from a single block of volcanic tuff. It sits in a 25-foot-deep pit, approached via a winding trench. The exterior is stark and geometric, while the interior contains a simple sanctuary with ancient altars and a replica of the Ark of the Covenant. Its isolated position and flawless proportions make it the most photographed and revered of all Lalibela's churches, symbolizing the triumph of faith carved in stone.

Don't miss

  • View the church from above at the edge of the pit for the iconic cross-shaped roof silhouette.
  • Descend into the pit and walk around the entire church to appreciate its monolithic scale.
  • Step inside to see the three altars and the replica of the Ark of the Covenant, a focus of devotion.
