Biete Medhane Alem, meaning 'House of the Saviour of the World,' is a remarkable rock-hewn church in Lalibela. Believed to be the largest monolithic church globally, it was carved downward from a single stone mass. Visitors approach through a deep trench and enter a vast interior supported by 72 pillars. The church houses a replica of the Ark of the Covenant and features intricate carvings and faded frescoes. Its sheer scale and the precision of its carving make it a highlight of the Lalibela complex.
