Biete Maryam (House of Mary) is one of the most ornate of Lalibela's churches, believed to be the first built by King Lalibela. Its interior is covered with vibrant 15th-century frescoes of saints, angels, and biblical stories, along with carved pillars and geometric patterns. The church features a central nave with a holy of holies, and a unique set of carved windows that filter light dramatically. Pilgrims often stop here to pray before the icon of Mary, making it a deeply spiritual stop within the complex.

Don't miss

  • Study the well-preserved frescoes on the walls and ceiling, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
  • Examine the intricately carved pillars and arches, each with distinct motifs and symbols.
  • Observe the holy of holies, a small chapel within the church that houses the tabot (ark tablet) of Mary.
