Biete Lehem, translating to 'House of Bread,' is one of Lalibela's eleven monolithic churches. Carved from a single rock, it features detailed geometric and figurative carvings on its walls and pillars. The name references the Eucharist, and the church is used for liturgical services. Visitors can admire the well-preserved interior, including a stone tabot (altar) and ancient murals. Its intimate scale and artistic details offer a quieter, more contemplative experience compared to larger churches in the complex.

Don't miss

  • Study the intricate geometric and figurative carvings adorning the walls and pillars.
  • View the stone tabot (altar) used in Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy.
  • Appreciate the ancient murals that depict biblical scenes.
