Johan Skytte (1577–1645) was a Swedish nobleman and chancellor who, under King Gustavus Adolphus, helped establish the University of Tartu in 1632. The monument was created by Estonian sculptor Jaak Soans and unveiled in 1992 to mark the university's 360th anniversary.
