Izalco Volcano, known as the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific' for its historic eruptions visible from sea, is a popular hiking destination near the town of Izalco. The volcano's symmetrical cone rises 1,950 meters (6,398 ft) and last erupted in 1966. The hike to the summit takes about 3–4 hours each way, traversing loose volcanic ash and rocky terrain. From the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the Cerro Verde National Park, and the Santa Ana Volcano. The trail passes through changing ecosystems, from dry forest to alpine scrub.
Don't miss
- Hike to the summit for 360-degree views of the Pacific and Santa Ana Volcano
- Observe volcanic rock formations and sparse vegetation unique to recent lava flows
- Spot birds like the turquoise-browed motmot along the trail
