Imbabura Volcano, a dormant stratovolcano towering over Otavalo, is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Its 4,630-meter (15,190-foot) peak provides sweeping vistas of the surrounding Andes, including Cuicocha Lake and the valley of Otavalo. The hike to the summit is strenuous, taking about 6–8 hours round trip, and requires good fitness and acclimatization. Along the way, hikers traverse paramo grasslands and rocky terrain, often spotting birds like caracaras and hummingbirds. The mountain holds spiritual significance for local indigenous communities, who consider it a protector.
