Puerta del Conde is a monumental gate and adjacent park that marks the site where the Dominican Republic's independence was proclaimed on February 27, 1844. Originally part of the city's defensive walls, the gate now stands as a powerful national symbol. Visitors can walk through the arch, explore the surrounding Independence Park (Parque Independencia), and see the Altar de la Patria, a mausoleum containing the remains of the founding fathers. The area is a hub of patriotic activity and a must-see for understanding Dominican history.
