The Alcázar de Colón is the first fortified European palace built in the Americas, located in the Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the residence of Diego Columbus, Christopher Columbus's first-born son, and his family. Today it operates as a museum with 22 rooms furnished with period pieces and artwork.

A bit of history
Built between 1511 and 1514, the palace was the home of Diego Columbus and his wife María Álvarez de Toledo, where their children were born. Three generations of the Columbus family lived there until the late 16th century. In 1586, the British pirate Sir Francis Drake captured and looted the palace. It fell into ruin by the mid-18th century and was abandoned until restoration between 1955 and 1957 turned it into a museum.
