Old Town Square

Old Town Square is the historic heart of Prague's Old Town, located between Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. The square is surrounded by Gothic and Baroque buildings, including the Church of Our Lady before Týn with its 80-meter towers and St. Nicholas Church. At its center stands the Jan Hus Memorial, erected in 1915 to mark the 500th anniversary of his death.

Getting there

Know before you go

• The historic center has cobblestone streets; wear comfortable walking shoes.
• Prague is very walkable; you can easily walk from Wenceslas Square to Old Town Square.
• Public transport buses do not enter the Old Town; use electric trams or the metro to reach the area.
• Always use pedestrian crossings; jaywalking is punishable by a fine of 1000 Kč.

A bit of history

The square was the site of the Old Town Square execution, where 27 Czech nobles were beheaded by Habsburgs after the Battle of White Mountain. Crosses on the pavement mark the spot, and a nearby plaque lists the victims' names. A Marian Column erected after the Thirty Years' War was demolished in 1918 during celebrations of independence from the Habsburg empire, then re-erected in 2020.
