Church of Our Lady before Týn

The Church of Our Lady before Týn is a Gothic church that dominates Prague's Old Town. Its two 80-meter towers are topped with spires featuring eight smaller spires each. The main entrance is through a narrow passage between houses on the western side.

A bit of history

A Romanesque church stood here in the 11th century for foreign merchants. The current Gothic church was built from the 14th century, influenced by Matthias of Arras and Peter Parler. It was controlled by Hussites for two centuries. After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, the Hussite chalice on the gable was replaced by a sculpture of the Virgin Mary. The church was struck by lightning in 1679, damaging the vault, which was later replaced with a lower Baroque one.
