Colon Cemetery, named for Christopher Columbus, is one of the world's great cemeteries, covering 57 hectares with over 800,000 graves. Established in 1876, it is a city of the dead with ornate mausoleums, marble angels, and intricate carvings reflecting Havana's history and wealth. The centerpiece is the towering Capilla Central, a 23-meter-high chapel. Visitors can wander the grid-like avenues, seek out the tomb of La Milagrosa (the Miraculous Woman), and admire the craftsmanship of the funerary art.
