Las Baulas de Guanacaste Protected Zone extends the conservation efforts of Marino Las Baulas National Park, encompassing critical nesting beaches for the leatherback turtle. This area is a sanctuary for the largest of all sea turtles, which come ashore from October to March to lay their eggs. Visitors can join guided night tours during nesting season to witness this ancient ritual, with strict regulations to minimize disturbance. The protected zone also includes dry tropical forest and estuaries, offering hiking trails and opportunities to see howler monkeys, coatis, and a variety of birds. The beaches here are less developed than Tamarindo's main strip, providing a more natural coastal experience.
