Carate Mixed Wildlife Refuge is a private protected area located near the remote Carate beach on the Osa Peninsula. The refuge features well-marked trails that meander through secondary and primary forest, providing excellent opportunities to see scarlet macaws, white-faced capuchins, and collared peccaries. Its proximity to the beach allows visitors to combine a jungle hike with a coastal stroll, offering a diverse experience in a less-visited part of the region.

Don't miss

  • Spotting scarlet macaws flying overhead or feeding in almond trees
  • Walking the forest trails to see capuchin monkeys and agoutis
  • Relaxing on the adjacent Carate beach after a hike
