Drum Tower (Gulou)

The Drum Tower, known locally as Gulou, is a historic bell and drum tower located in the heart of Xi'an, just south of the Muslim Quarter. Built in 1380 during the Ming Dynasty, this imposing wooden structure stands 34 meters tall and served as a timekeeping center, with drums beaten at dusk to signal the closing of city gates. Today, it is one of Xi'an's most beloved landmarks, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient Chinese urban life. The tower is constructed entirely of wood without nails, a testament to traditional Chinese architecture. A bit of history

The Drum Tower was originally built in 1380 under Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty to mark the center of Xi'an and regulate daily life. It was rebuilt in 1699 and 1740 after fires. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, drums were beaten at dusk to signal the curfew, while the nearby Bell Tower rang at dawn. The tower survived the Cultural Revolution largely intact and was designated a national cultural relic in 1996.
