The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a seven-story brick structure rising 64 meters in the southern part of Xi'an. Built in 652 AD under Emperor Gaozong, it originally stored sutras and figurines brought from India by the monk Xuanzang. Visitors can climb the narrow internal staircases to each level, where windows frame expanding views of the city and surrounding plains. The pagoda's simple, elegant form has become a symbol of Xi'an, and the grounds are especially lively at night when fountains and lights create a festive atmosphere.

Don't miss

  • Climb to the top for panoramic views of Xi'an's skyline and the surrounding countryside.
  • See the stone carvings and calligraphy on the pagoda's exterior, including inscriptions by Tang dynasty scholars.
  • Visit the nearby fountain square in the evening for a synchronized water and light show.
