The Potala Palace dominates the Lhasa skyline with its massive red and white walls rising 13 stories above the Marpo Ri hill. Originally built in the 7th century and expanded in the 17th century, it served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas until 1959. Visitors climb a series of stone steps through the White Palace (administrative quarters) to the Red Palace (chapels and burial stupas). Inside, you'll find intricate murals, golden statues, and the jewel-encrusted tombs of past Dalai Lamas. The palace offers sweeping views of Lhasa and the surrounding mountains, making the steep ascent worthwhile.

Don't miss

  • The jewel-encrusted golden stupa of the 5th Dalai Lama in the Red Palace
  • The Dalai Lama's private quarters and meditation chamber in the White Palace
  • Panoramic views of Lhasa from the rooftop terraces
