The Battle of Iquique took place on May 21, 1879, off the coast of Iquique, when the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar engaged and sank the Chilean wooden corvette Esmeralda. This dramatic encounter is commemorated at the battle site, marked by a monument and a small museum near the harbor. Visitors can see the actual anchor and other relics from the Esmeralda, and learn about the heroism of Captain Arturo Prat, who died in the battle. The site offers a poignant glimpse into Chile's naval history.
